Toby Keith Proves A Force To Be Reckoned With

Country super star Toby Keith Covel was born on July 8, 1961. An Oklahoma native, he became inspired by music through two strong influences. At the age of 12 he used to watch his grandmother's eight-piece band entertain guests at her bar. Additionally, his idol, Merle Haggard, was believed to be not only a great singer, but songwriter as well.

Following stints in the oil fields after high school, the formation of the band Easy Money, and a USFL semi-pro football league defensive position, he elected to seriously pursue his music career. He moved to Nashville in the 1990s, but failed to achieve success until accidental exposure of his demo to Mercury Records resulted in his first album simply titled "Toby Keith" in 1993 which went platinum.

By 1997, after teaming with Sting he won his first Grammy nomination, but soon moved to Polydor Records in 1994. He returned to Mercury Records in 1997 and ended up at Dreamworks in 1998 where he continued his success. In 2000 Keith won two Academy of Country Music awards.

Shortly after this success, however, his father died in a car accident which inspired a new kind of music that included the release of the album "Unleased" which sold 3 million records and included a Willie Nelson "Beer for My Horses." This resulted in being voted Entertainer of the Year in both 2002 and 2003.

Dreamworks closed in 2005 which prompted the launch of his own record label he titled Show Dog Nashville. From the release of his first album under that label in 2007, he continued on the top 200 Billboard charts and ultimately compiled his 35 Biggest Hits in 2008 which went platinum immediately. He has continued to enjoy success not only in music, but in many other ventures since that time.

Toby's performances have not been limited to the music industry. In fact, by 2005 not only had he successfully completed several advertising campaigns and cameo spots on pay-per-view stations, he also co-starred in "Broken Bridges" and wrote and starred in "Beer for My Horses" in 2008. Additionally, he began opening restaurants and expanded his humanitarian efforts. As a credit to his success, Toby Keith has become a force to be reckoned with on many fronts.
