The Colorado Rockies of Major League Baseball (MLB) use Coors Field Denver CO as their home ballpark. Their former home was Mile High Stadium. Coors Field, which sold naming rights to the famous local brewing company, sits just two blocks away from the city's Union Station in the Lower Downtown district. With standing room included, the venue holds about 51,300 fans for baseball. There are also 4,526 club seats and 63 luxury suites.
Along with Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, it's the only baseball-only facility in the National League. Construction on the building got underway in October of 1992 and the venue opened in April of 1995. The natural grass facility was built at a cost of approximately $300 million. The plans had originally called for a capacity of about 44,000, but more seats were added after the Rockies attracted close to 4.5 million fans in 1993, which was a record for baseball.
While the ballpark was being built, construction, workers found several dinosaur fossils on the grounds. One of these was a 1,000 lb., seven-foot-long triceratops skull. This led to the club choosing a dinosaur named Dinger as its mascot. After the fossils were found, rumors spread that the location may be called Jurassic Park.
The stadium became the first MLB ball yard utilize an underground heating system. The seats in the upper deck's 20th row are purple in color to signify the city's elevation point of a mile high. Most of the other seats are dark green.
The 1998 MLB All-Star game was held at Coors Field Denver CO and the Boston Red Sox clinched the World Series there in 1997 after winning games three and four of the playoff series to sweep the Rockies four games to none. You'll also find there is a small microbrewery behind the stands. It can be accessed from both inside and outside of the complex.
