The Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado Enjoys a Long, Rich History
The Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado is a 9,450-capacity, open-air stadium that's made out of rock near the town of Morrison. It was opened in 1906 and has hosted some of the world's top performers, especially in the rock music genre. The structure is operated and owned by the City and County of Denver.
The location is well known for its excellent acoustics. This led John Brisben Walker to put on several concerts in the early 1900s. They were successful and the location soon became a popular entertainment venue. The City of Denver bought the area in 1927 for nearly $55,000. Previous names at the site were the Garden of the Angels and the Garden of the Titans. It received its current name in 1928.
The venue gained worldwide acclaim in 1911 when opera singer Mary Garden performed there and said it was the best place she had ever sung at. It became popular with rock and roll bands in the early 1960s. One of the first groups to play there was the Beatles in 1964. However, in 1971 the theater banned rock concerts when nearly 1,000 fans without tickets arrived at a sold-out concert by British band Jethro Tull and eventually started a riot. The shows resumed when the ban was
lifted after legal action in 1976.
A highly publicized performance at the location took place in 1983 when Irish rock band U2 recorded a live album and video there, titled Live at Red Rocks: Under a Blood Red Sky. It's believed that the band Widespread Panic has played the venue the most times at 35.
Since the U2 show, the Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado has seen numerous artists record live concerts there. These include performances by Stevie Nicks, the Dave Matthews Band, The Samples, John Tesh, Incubus, Blues Traveler, Steve Martin, The Moody Blues, Neil Young, Depeche Mode, and Big Head Todd and the Monsters.
