The Washington Capitals are a NHL team for Washington, D.C., which happens rarely. The team was formed in 1974 by Abe Pollin and have been in the same city ever since. They are in the Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference, where they play at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C.

Bruce Boudreau has been the head coach of the Capitals since 2007. In his first year, he was able to take the Capitals from 30th in the NHL to the Southeast Division champions. He has also been the fastest coach, in franchise history, to get to 20 wins in the season. It seems like this guy knows his hockey and it is only his first time head coaching in the NHL.

With 48 wins and 23 loses, the Capitals had a stellar 2010-11 season. They were ranked first in the Southeast Division and first in the Eastern Conference. With the number one playoff seed in the Eastern Conference, the Capitals beat the New York Rangers, in the first round. The second round put them against the Tampa Bay Lightning, but the Capitals were defeated.

The home of the Capitals is the Verizon Center in Washington D.C.'s Chinatown. The arena was built in 1997 with a seating capacity of 19,740 people. Renovations, throughout the years, have reduced the seating capacity to 18,398 people.

The Capitals have only been in a Stanley Cup championship once, in 1998. Their opponents were the Detroit Red Wings, who were able to sweep the Capitals. Must have been tough to have the championship ripped right out from under their nose.

Most people don't know that Washington D.C. has their own hockey team. It's not an average hockey team either; it has been able to make itself known in the NHL and has continued to do it with their latest seasons. With a great coach at the helm, the Capitals will continue to be a team that no one will right off as an easy win.
