The Washington Redskins Went From Beantown To The Nation's Capitol

The team now known as the Washington Redskins joined the NFL in 1932 as the Boston Braves but the nickname was changed during their first season. The Boston Redskins played home games at Fenway park between 1933 and 1936 before moving to Washington D. C. Prior to the 1937 season when they won their first NFL championship.

The team plays home games at FedEx Field, originally known as Jack Kent Cooke Stadium and renamed in 2000. The stadium is located in Prince George's County, Maryland and has its own exit off the Capital Beltway. Seating nearly 92,000 fans, the stadium is the largest in the league but still has a waiting list for season tickets that is decades long.

Fedex Field TicketsSammy Baugh is the only former player to have his jersey number retired. The versatile player spent 16 years with the team as a quarterback, punter and defensive back between 1937 and 1952. He led the league in passing six times and topped the passing, punting and interception categories in 1943. Shortly after retiring jersey number 33 in honor of Baugh, team officials decided they would no longer officially retire jersey numbers. Despite this official policy, numbers worn by Art Monk, Sonny Jurgensen, Joe Theismann, John Riggins, and others have not been reused.

Legendary running back John Riggins was the second player after Jim Brown of Cleveland to rush for more than 100 touchdowns in his career. While attending Kansas University, he broke the rushing record of Gale Sayers.

The rivalry with the Dallas Cowboys began when the Cowboys came into the league in 1960 as an expansion team. In 1961, the two teams became part of the same division and have faced off twice a year during the regular season ever since. In 1958, the sale of the Redskins to Texas oil man Clint Murchison, Jr. Fell through at the last minute and the Cowboys were founded as an expansion team.
