The Story Behind Wicked The Broadway Show
The Great Land of Oz was and always will be a fantastic place to visit on the Silver Screen. However, while everyone loves to hate the Wicked Witch and adores Glinda the Good, the story that unfolds for these two characters has roots before Dorothy and Toto landed on the scene. Gregory Maguire wrote the novel Wicked that tells this part of their story and is the inspiration for Wicked the Broadway Show.
Directed by Joe Mantello, this show will put to rest the uneasy feeling you might get when you see the green and glowing skin of the Witch named Elphaba. In fact, you may even begin to feel sorry for her. She started out as a smart and sorely misunderstood young girl.
Glinda was exactly the opposite. Glinda was beautiful and sweet. Everyone loved her and what she stood for. The girls began as best friends and ended up as true arch
enemies. This is the start of a saga that lands Elphaba in a melting puddle during the final chapter of Oz.
This Broadway hit has been named Show of the Decade by Entertainment Weekly and for good reason. The shifting tale will have you at the edge of your seat during every scene. There is never a dull moment while the two girl's story unfolds. The Wizard makes life harder for Elphaba, actually being the one that dubs her the Witch of the West.
While Elphaba was being put on the bad back burner, Glinda stood by the Wizard for more or less fitting into Oz society. The examples set forth in this play depict many actions people have always done to avoid being left out of society or not fitting into the crowd. Elphaba simply stood up and disagreed with the masses and it got her demoralized and vanquished from the better side of Oz society.
