The Denver Nuggets continue to happily build a roster around a team concept, bucking the ageless NBA trend of first finding superstars. The fans with Denver Nuggets ticket to the Pepsi Center are just as glad the front office has done this, as the basketball team has not fallen off the playoff radar since adopting this strategy. With the entire 2013 season schedule left, the Nuggets to improve defensively to ensure a continuation of these postseason appearances. It has been the offense that has been good enough to keep the team over .500.
Six players are in double figures for the season, with small forward Danilo Gallinari leading the team and three if his starting compatriots following him (shooting guard Andre Iguodala, point guard Ty Lawson, and forward Kenneth Faried). In addition to their offensive production, Iguodala and Faried are solid defenders. If Lawson is able to use his unquestioned quickness to become a better perimeter defender Denver
could move up a few seeds, perhaps earning home court advantage in the first round of the NBA Playoffs.
Coach George Karl is well aware that Gallinari and starting center Kosta Koufas are not going to offer much resistance on the defensive end. So, he oftentimes brings athletic center JaVale McGee and wing player Corey Brewer off the bench. These two surprisingly are also giving the second unit a little offensive burst. They are helping backup point guard Andre Miller keep the Nuggets in the game.
Fans should expect McGee to rejoin the starting unit sometime this season. His move to the bench is one meant to bring balance to the units; however, the club is going to have to make some sort of a change to overtake the Portland Trail Blazers and even challenge the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Northwest Division. They should also expect Iguodala to look better and better as he adjust to his first season with the Nuggets. He is a talented perimeter player and defender whose three point and free throw percentages are slightly down as he adjusts to his place in the team strategy. There should be no question as to whether the Nuggets will be in the playoffs come the end of the regular season schedule, as this roster has too much team and complimentary talent to miss out, even if they do play in the Western Conference.
